Game Collecting Common Terms Glossary

Backlog – The list of games a collector owns but has not yet played.

Beta Version – An early version of a game released for testing, often not intended for public release. Collectible due to their rarity and insight into the development process.

Black Label – Refers to the original release of a game, with the original cover art and packaging, often more valuable than subsequent releases.

Box Art – The artwork on the game’s packaging. Collectors often look for games with specific box art variations.

Bundle – A collection of games or a game with additional hardware or accessories, sold together as a single package.

CIB (Complete in Box) – Refers to a game that includes the box, manual, and all original contents that were included at release.

Collector’s Edition – A special edition of a game that includes additional collectible items, such as figurines, art books, or extra in-game content.

Demo/Game Trial – Limited versions of games that were used for promotional purposes or displayed in retail stores before the full game’s release.

Graded Game – A game that has been professionally graded for quality and sealed within an archival case. These grades can significantly affect the value of collectible games.

Homebrew – Games created by enthusiasts or independent developers for platforms that are typically no longer commercially supported.

Import – A game that is brought into one country from another, often sought after if the game was not officially released in a collector’s home country.

Limited Edition – A version of a game that is made in limited quantities and often includes special packaging or additional content not available in the standard version.

Loose – A game that is sold without its original packaging or manual.

Mint Condition – Describes a game or game-related item that is in perfect condition, as if it were new or never used.

NIB (New in Box) – A game that is still in its original packaging and has never been opened.

PAL/NTSC – Video game formats based on television broadcast standards. PAL is commonly used in Europe and parts of Australasia, while NTSC is used in North America and parts of Asia.

Platinum Hits – Refers to re-released games that have sold a significant number of units. These are often sold at a lower price point with different packaging.

Pre-Order Bonus – Special incentives offered to customers who order a game before its release, often including exclusive items or content.

Region Lock – A restriction that prevents games from being played on a console from a different region (e.g., a game from Japan not working on a US console).

Reprint – A game that has been printed and distributed again after the original release. Often less valuable than first editions.

Repro (Reproduction) – A game that has been unofficially recreated and is not an original print. Often used by collectors who want to play rare games without paying high prices.

Scalper – A term used disparagingly for individuals who purchase games in bulk to sell them at a higher price, particularly for limited releases.

Sealed – A game that remains in its original factory seal. Highly prized among collectors for its untouched condition.

Variant – Refers to games that have differences in packaging, software version, or included content, released within the same region.

White Label – Promo or review copies of games, which are often sent to media outlets before the official release. These can be rare and highly collectible.
