Model Building & Collecting Common Terms Glossary

Scale: The ratio of the model’s size relative to the real object. Common scales include 1:18 for cars and 1:48 for aircraft.

Kit Model: A set that requires assembly, often sold with parts that need to be painted and glued.

Die-Cast: Models produced by pouring molten metal into molds, typically very durable and detailed.

Pre-Assembled: Models that come fully assembled and painted, ready for display right out of the box.

Limited Edition: Models produced in specific, limited quantities to enhance collectibility and value.

Weathering: Techniques used to give models a realistic aged or used look.

Prototype: The original model or design from which others are made or replicated.

Detailing Kit: Additional parts and decals that can be added to a model to increase detail and realism.

Diorama: A miniature three-dimensional scene in which models are displayed, often to recreate a historical or fictional event.

Custom Model: A model that has been modified or built from scratch to create a unique piece.

Resin Model: Models cast from resin, a lightweight and detailed material, offering more detail than die-cast.

RTR (Ready-to-Run): Typically used in model railroading and RC cars, indicating that the model requires no assembly.

Aftermarket Parts: Additional accessories or parts not included with the original model kit, used to enhance or modify the model.

Static Model: A model designed solely for display purposes, without operational features.

Operational Model: Models that include functional elements, such as working lights or motors.

Collectors’ Edition: A version of a model released with special features or packaging, aimed at collectors.

Box Art: The artwork on the packaging of model kits, which can be collectible in its own right.

Out of Production (OOP): Refers to models or kits that are no longer being manufactured.

Restoration: The process of repairing or refurbishing older models to restore them to their original condition.

Authenticity Certificate: A document certifying the authenticity of a model, particularly important in high-end collectibles.
